We took the month of June off from social media…here’s what we learned
You may have clicked on this blog out of morbid curiosity, wondering why on earth anyone would (or could) exit the social media space for over 30 days. The truth is, we’ve always been partial to offline experiences over our online presence. In fact, we created an entire methodology taught to our clients who struggle with finding rhythm and balance when it comes to the interwebs - and it honestly works so well that we’ve used it ourselves for the last 5 years.
let’s talk about what we learned:
IT TRULY IS A HIGHLIGHT REEL: Just the other day we read an article talking about how a highly paid social media influencer hires a nanny every day of the week to watch her kids, then drives to a set where she films videos, has the nanny bring her children to the set for 10-20 minutes, pretends to participate in activities and normal routines, then sends them home with the nanny again while she heads out for a day of shopping etc. We’re not condemning or condoning, but this is a MAJOR issue with the way social media presents itself - it’s simply not authentic.
IT CONSUMES VOLUMES OF TIME: We set timers on all apps that can eat away time faster than a rabbit eats a blade of grass, but even still, we noticed a decrease in our overall screentime updates at the end of each consecutive week.
GRATITUDE INCREASED AND CONSUMERISM DECREASED: We were more focused on the blessings around us than the wants being forced upon us. Advertising and marketing strategies are good. Too good, we think. Those innocent little ads on your newsfeed aren’t there by accident, and they could be wreaking havoc on the average consumer’s budget. Fortunately, we have a financial advisor who keeps our eyes on proverbial savings prize, but it’s all too easy to be conned into thinking, “I need THAT!” when looking at a flashy ad.
IT BEGS THE QUESTION…IS IT REALLY NECESSARY? We’ve often toyed with the idea of going completely off the social media grid. Our founder, Sarah, has a Facebook page for the purpose of spreading the word about all that we do here at Holistik, but as for her own personal Instagram? It’s gone. Happily and gladly; a thing of the past. In fact, when viewing our client list, we can honestly say that every one of our clients has been attained and maintained completely without the use of social media.
Here’s the bottom line - if you’re feeling completely dysregulated throughout the day, stimulated beyond measure when trying to sleep, or just plain discontented or upset by the onslaught of exposure to worldwide events - it’s time to make a change.
Our 1-1-1 method works, and we’ve made it available to all on our YouTube channel (click here for the explanation video), because we believe in providing value to all who can benefit - not just paying clients. If you’re struggling, you need accountability and you just can’t seem to make a lifestyle change on your own, we’re here for you!
